Estate landscape master plan at a gated Sarasota property; live oak canopy, layered native plantings, and a naturalized pond edge

Live Oak Estate

Sarasota, Florida

A comprehensive estate master plan for a gated Sarasota 75-acre property, restoring a live oak canopy and tree-tunnel arrival, layering native plantings, and weaving in recreation from putting green to fire-lit pond.

This gated Sarasota estate called for a true master plan; a cohesive vision uniting a dramatic arrival, refined home surrounds, and resort-style recreation across the property. Rooted in a naturalistic Florida character, the design leans on native and regionally appropriate species, with select non-natives woven in for seasonal color and textural contrast.

The experience begins at the winding, gated driveway, where layered plantings and strategic tree placement create a sequence of curated views that unfold toward the home. New large-caliper live oaks reestablish the mature canopy and tree-tunnel effect that once defined the property, while structured entry plantings gradually give way to looser, natural arrangements deeper into the site, balancing formality with authenticity.

At the front approach, the planting scheme is built to integrate seamlessly with upcoming architectural and hardscape improvements: new pavers, turf accents, a realigned driveway, and a future home addition. Existing sago and select Sylvester palms may be relocated for better scale and sightlines, overgrown material removed, and foundation beds refined through improved grading, cohesive hedging, and layered plantings. Focal points like a flagpole, framed windows, and natural boulders strengthen the visual organization.

Beyond the entry, the plan brings the property to life for everyday enjoyment: a putting green with chipping area, enhanced paths to the lanai and sport courts, and fire features overlooking the pond. The pond edge naturalizes gradually with magnolia and bald cypress for ecological restoration, joined by additional live oaks for long-term canopy succession.

Throughout, ornamental and native grasses, including muhly and fakahatchee, soften transitions, buffer artificial turf, and unify the natural and built elements into a single, intentional composition.

The result is a restored canopy, expanded usability, and a master plan that blends structure, recreation, and Florida-native beauty across the entire estate.
