Faith Presbyterian Church
Sarasota, Florida

A drought-tolerant, all-native courtyard connecting two church buildings, and built for gathering, easy circulation, and year-round beauty on Sarasota's rainfall alone, with zero irrigation.
Faith Presbyterian Church needed the courtyard between its two buildings to do more: move people comfortably, invite them to linger, and stay beautiful through every Sarasota season without the cost and upkeep of an irrigation system.
Our design team delivered exactly that.
At the heart of the plan is a resilient, all-native plant palette. Hardy Florida natives: sabal palms, coontie, and muhly grass need supplemental watering only while establishing, then thrive on natural rainfall alone. The result is a low-maintenance landscape perfectly adapted to local conditions.
Circulation drives the layout. Primary paths define clear movement through the courtyard, while a secondary route links seamlessly to the parking lot for easy access. Natural stepping stones act as gentle transitions between spaces, guiding visitors from paved areas into planted pockets.
Near the playground, we stripped away excess hardscape, keeping only essential circulation, to open valuable ground for additional planting. Three 8-foot picnic tables anchor the gathering space, comfortably seating up to 24 adults or a larger group of children and families.
Throughout, layered palms, shrubs, grasses, and groundcovers add texture and biodiversity, while strategic screening conceals the existing A/C units to preserve visual harmony.
Shade sails over key areas keep play and relaxation comfortable in the Florida sun.
The finished courtyard balances function and nature; open space, privacy, and stronger community connection, shaped by the site itself and built on sustainable choices.
